The Umrah is an Islamic pilgrimage to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, that can be done at any time of the year, unlike the Hajj, which has set dates.

Hajj is obligatory while Umrah is posthumous worship. Umrah is a shorter, voluntary pilgrimage that can be done/performed around the year, while the Hajj in certain days in the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hajah.

The main rituals are:

  • Ihram (The State of Purity)
  • Tawaf of Kaaba
  • Sa’i (Walking between Safa and Marwah)
  • Halq or Taqsir (Cutting of hair)

Before Umrah, a pilgrim must wear “The Ihram”, a sacred state that requires specific dressing “Two White Sheets” and abiding by specific “Rules of Behavior”.

Men dress in two white, unstitched sheets, and women cover their entire bodies with clothes.

Prohibitions during Ihram include:

  • Cutting hair or nails.
  • Usage of perfume (any type, any condition, even soap, shampoo, etc)
  • Engaging in marital relations.
  • Animal  hunting

Tawaf is walking around “Khanna Kabba” seven times counterclockwise. It starts from the Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad).

Circling seven times between “Safa and Marwah” is called “Sa’i”. It follows the action of “Amma Hagara”, when she anxiously circled for her son Ishmael’s thirst and prayed fervently.

The Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) is a revered object set into the corner of the Kaaba. This is the “Stone from Heaven” which was placed in the wall of the Kaaba by Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Pilgrims try to kiss or touch it during Tawaf.

Although the Umrah rituals can usually be finished in a few hours, but the overall duration of the trip may vary depending on travel and personal preferences.

Yes, Muslims can perform Umrah as many times as they like.

Women are required to be accompanied by a mahram (male relative) or in a group with other women, depending on the regulations of Saudi Arabia.
